The plan was to watch scary movies until somebody got too scared to keep going.

Cherry cola fizzed in cheap plastic cups while somebody dug through a stack of VHS tapes looking for the scariest one. Halfway through the second movie, somebody suggested holding a séance “just to see what would happen.” Nag Champa drifted through the room as the television hummed softly in the background.

Nobody ever agreed whether the knocking started before or after they said goodbye.
