The whole village smelled of honey. Flower crowns rested on every table, bees wandered lazily between wildflowers, and beeswax candles softened beneath a sun that refused to set. Smoke from sacred herbs drifted through the warm afternoon air while everyone laughed, everyone ate, and everyone smiled as though they’d been waiting for you. Fresh fruit stained your fingertips crimson. Nobody mentioned it. The singing grew louder. Somewhere beneath the sweetness of honey and flowers, something was already burning.
