Nobody actually believed the exorcism would work. One friend brought the bubblegum and an Ouija board from the toy aisle. Another “borrowed” a little bottle of blessed oil from her Catholic grandma. Somebody else showed up with a old wooden Ouija board, along with an old book in Latin they took from their weird aunt’s basement bookshelf. They lit a candle, chewed pink bubblegum, popped bubbles between nervous laughs, and scattered bubblegum wrappers across the bedroom floor while somebody insisted they knew the words to a real exorcism.

Nothing happened.

The lights flickered.

The planchette moved.
